Spotlight USA: Embracing Diversity -webinaarisarja toteutetaan yhteistyössä Suomi-Amerikka Yhdistysten Liitto SAM:n ja The Finnish American Studies Associationin (FASA) kanssa. 4-osaisessa webinaarisarjassa keskustellaan suomeksi ja englanniksi Yhdysvaltoja puhuttavista ajankohtaisista teemoista kuten rasismi, salaliittoteoriat ja politiikan polarisoituminen.

Everyone wants diversity. But not everyone wants it on their street. Some of America’s most racially integrated neighborhoods and cities are on a path to becoming segregated all over again.

As the U.S. population has become more racially and ethnically diverse, Americans have mixed views about how the country might change when Blacks, Hispanics, Asians and other minorities make up a majority of the population.

Mark Hersey (associate professor, Mississippi state university and Fulbright Bicentennial Chair in American Studies, Helsinki university) and Saara Kekki (researcher, Helsinki university) will discuss among other things about how ethnic and racial identities have been inscribed onto the US landscape. The discussion is moderated by Stephen Lee.

Panelists: 
Mark Hersey is an associate professor of history at Mississippi State University where he directs the Center for the History of Agriculture, Science, and the Environment of the South. He is the author of My Work Is That of Conservation: An Environmental Biography of George Washington Carver (2011) and the co-editor of A Field on Fire: The Future of Environmental History (2019).  Hersey is 2021-2022 Fulbright Bicentennial Chair in American Studies, University of Helsinki. 

Saara Kekki (researcher, Helsinki university) is broadly interested in North American immigration, ethnicities, and historical networks. She is the co-author/editor of several books in North American Studies and Indigenous cultures. Her next book, Japanese American Incarceration at Heart Mountain: Networks and Power will be published by the University of Oklahoma Press in 2022.  Click here to read Kekki’s article (in Finnish) in SAM Magazine.
